What is a sewer shed?
A sewer shed is a small enclosed structure built around above-ground sewer infrastructure, most commonly used in northern communities where extreme cold and shallow bedrock make traditional buried sewer lines impractical. The shed insulates and protects the sewer components from freezing temperatures. When the shed itself fails, whether from a collapsed roof, damaged framing, or moisture intrusion, the sewer system inside loses its cold-weather protection and becomes vulnerable to freeze damage and system failure.
The Problem: Sheds Built Without the Framing They Need
Snow load in northern Manitoba and northern Ontario is not something you calculate loosely. It is not something you approximate. It is one of the primary structural loads any building in the north has to handle, and it is often the load that causes failures when structures are built to warmer-climate assumptions.

Sewer sheds fail in northern communities primarily because they are often built to standard warmer-climate specifications rather than to the actual snow load, wind load, and freeze-thaw conditions of the region. Rafters get undersized. Framing gets skipped. Roofing gets specified for the wrong climate. The result is structures that look adequate on day one but cannot handle the cumulative load of a real northern winter. Failures typically show up as sagging roofs, collapsed rafters, moisture infiltration, and eventually full roof collapse.
The Work
Gutting the Failed Shed
Every rebuild starts with stripping the shed down to the frame. This is not always straightforward. Sheds that have taken on moisture over time may have partially rotted framing, corroded fasteners, and compromised sheathing. We assess what can stay and what needs to come out.
In most of the rebuilds we have done, the answer is that very little of the original structure could stay. When framing was undersized on day one, patching it will not solve the problem. The structure needs to be rebuilt with the right specs.

The rebuild uses framing sized for northern snow and wind loads, spaced correctly for the span, and fastened to properly transfer loads down through the walls to the foundation. Structural reinforcement, including collar ties and appropriate bracing, gets designed in from the start.
This is not the place to save on lumber. The cost difference between properly sized framing and undersized framing is small at build time and enormous when the roof collapses two winters later.
Installing a Roof That Handles the North
New roofing goes on with materials rated for the climate they will actually live in. That means fastening patterns that account for high wind loads, underlayment that prevents ice damming, and flashing at every penetration to keep moisture from finding its way into the newly rebuilt structure.

The final step is making sure the shed is genuinely sealed against moisture, wind, and cold. A sewer shed that leaks even slightly loses its protective function. Every joint, penetration, and edge gets addressed with the assumption that this structure needs to protect the sewer system inside for decades, not seasons.
