Choosing a Fence That Survives Manitoba Frost Heave

A fence in Manitoba fails at the post, not at the panel. Frost grabs the post, lifts it, and drops it slightly out of position every year until the line goes crooked and the gates stop closing. The fixes are depth below the frost line, a post detail that does not give frost something to grip, and drainage at the base. Material choice matters far less than what is underground.


You can tell a lot about a neighbourhood by looking down its fence lines in April. Some are straight. Some look like a row of teeth. Same soil, same winter, same materials in a lot of cases.

The difference is almost always how the posts were set.


If you are planning a fence, or looking at one that has already gone crooked, this is what actually determines whether it stays where you put it.

What Is Frost Heave and Why Does It Wreck Fences?

Water in soil expands when it freezes. As the frost line moves down through the ground over the winter, that expansion pushes upward on anything embedded in the soil.


For a fence post, the force does not come from underneath. It comes from the sides. The frozen soil grips the post around its perimeter and lifts it as the surrounding ground swells, a process sometimes called adfreezing. When the ground thaws, the soil settles back but the post does not always drop all the way back down. Soil falls into the void beneath it.


Repeat that for a few winters and the post has walked its way upward. The fence line loses its level, rails pull at the fasteners, and gates that used to swing cleanly start dragging.

Clay soil, which is common across Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba, holds water well and swells significantly, which makes the effect stronger here than in sandy ground.


How Deep Do Fence Posts Need to Go?

Below the frost line, and the depth required depends on your location, the soil, and local requirements.


The principle is that if the bottom of the post sits below the depth where the ground freezes, the frozen layer above cannot lift it, because it is anchored in ground that is not moving. A post that stops short of that depth is sitting entirely within the moving zone.

This is where the shortcut shows up most. A post hole that is easy to dig is often easier because it is shallower, and the difference is invisible the day the fence goes in. It shows up three winters later.


Along with depth, a few details make a real difference:

  • A straight-sided hole rather than a flared or belled one, so there is less surface for frost to grip and no shelf for it to push against

  • A smooth post surface below grade for the same reason

  • Granular material at the base of the hole so water drains away rather than pooling

  • The top of the concrete or backfill shaped to shed water away from the post rather than forming a collar that holds it

  • Backfill compacted properly, because loose fill holds water


Does the Fence Material Matter for Frost?

For survival, not much. For maintenance and appearance, quite a lot.

Pressure-treated wood is the common choice, handles the climate reasonably, and needs periodic attention if you want it to keep its colour and resist checking. Cedar looks better for longer and costs more. Vinyl and composite systems shed maintenance but need their posts set just as carefully, and rigid systems can actually be less forgiving of movement because there is no give in the panel. Chain link and metal systems are durable and equally dependent on post depth.

The point worth internalizing is that no panel material compensates for a post that moves. Frost does not care what is bolted to the top of it.

Where material choice does matter structurally is at the base. Wood in permanent contact with wet soil is a rot risk, which is why post detail and drainage matter for wood in a way they do not for metal.

What About Gates?

Gates are where fences fail first, and they deserve to be treated as a separate problem.

A gate post carries an unbalanced load. The weight of the gate is hanging off one side, and every open and close cycle works on it. Add frost movement, and you get the classic Manitoba gate: fine in July, dragging on the ground in April, fine again by June.

What helps:

  • Oversized or deeper gate posts compared with the line posts

  • Bracing on the hinge post, either diagonal bracing back into the fence line or a rigid frame

  • A gate frame that is itself rigid and diagonally braced, so the gate does not rack independently

  • Adjustable hinges so seasonal movement can be corrected without rebuilding

  • Adequate clearance at the bottom, since a gate set tight to the ground has no tolerance for movement

If your gate is the only part of the fence giving you trouble, that is normal, and it is fixable without touching the rest of the fence.


Does Yard Drainage Affect the Fence?

Yes, and it is the part people most often overlook.

Saturated soil heaves more than dry soil, because there is more water in it to expand. A fence line running through the low point of a yard that holds water every spring is going to move more than the same fence on well-drained ground.


That means the fence problem and the yard problem are often the same problem. If your yard already pools water, fixing the grading and drainage benefits the fence, the deck, the garage pad, and the foundation all at once. Real Scenarios

Your fence is a few years old and the line has gone wavy. Posts are heaving. Individual posts can often be reset without replacing the whole fence, particularly if the panels and rails are still sound. It is worth having someone determine whether it is a handful of posts in a wet area or the whole line.


Only the gate has dropped. Very common, and usually a hinge post or bracing issue rather than a whole fence problem. Often correctable.


You are replacing an old fence and want to reuse the post holes. Understand what was there first. If the old posts heaved, the existing holes are exactly where the problem was, and reusing them without addressing depth and drainage repeats it.


You are fencing a new build or a fresh yard. This is the easy case, because you can set the grade and the drainage before the fence goes in rather than working around them. Doing the yard, the fence, and any hard surfaces as one project means they are designed to work together. FAQ

Can a heaved fence post be fixed without replacing the fence?

Often yes. Individual posts can be pulled, the hole corrected for depth and drainage, and the post reset, with the existing rails and panels reattached. Whether that is worthwhile depends on how many posts have moved and the condition of the rest of the fence.


Should fence posts be set in concrete or gravel?

Both approaches are used and both can work when done properly. Concrete gives rigidity and, if shaped correctly at the top, sheds water. Gravel drains freely and can allow frost to move around the post more than grip it. What matters more than the choice is depth, drainage, and the shape of the hole.


Do I need a permit to build a fence?

Requirements vary by municipality and by fence height and location. Your contractor should know the local process and confirm what applies to your property before work starts.


How long should a fence last in Manitoba?

A properly installed fence lasts a long time. What shortens it is post movement and moisture at the base, not the weather on the panels. Maintenance requirements vary considerably by material.


Can a fence be installed in late fall?

Post work depends on workable ground, so late season installs are possible until the ground begins to freeze, after which digging becomes impractical. Booking earlier in the season gives you a much better chance of getting the work done well rather than done fast.


My neighbour's fence is fine and mine is not. Why?

Usually drainage or post depth. Two properties can sit on the same soil and have very different water conditions depending on grade, downspout placement, and what is upslope.
